Data Protection and Privacy

On November 1st, a session was conducted at Swahilipot Hub Mombasa by Ms. Wendy Kuyoh, a lawyer specializing in technology and data protection law. This event was organized in collaboration with Strathmore Business School and USAID, aiming to emphasize the importance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) adhering to relevant legislation, particularly concerning personal data handling. Given the increasing global significance of personal data protection, the Data Protection Act (Act No. 24 of 2019) places crucial responsibilities on data controllers and processors, including SMEs, to ensure the protection of individuals’ constitutional right to privacy.

In the contemporary data-driven landscape, SMEs play a vital role in safeguarding privacy rights. Ms. Wendy Kuyoh’s session highlighted the legal obligations that SMEs, acting as data handlers, must follow under the Data Protection Act. This legislation not only enforces compliance but also contributes significantly to preserving individuals’ privacy, a fundamental constitutional entitlement. The event represented a commendable initiative in raising awareness about the essential connection between SMEs and data protection, thereby fostering a business environment that respects privacy rights.
