Sanaa Kama Biashara Showcase: Nurturing Artistic Talent in Mombasa

On Saturday, September 16th, 2023, the Sanaa Kama Biashara program by MMS Advocates celebrated a milestone as its inaugural cohort of Mombasa artists graduated from their seven-month capacity-building program. The event was marked with a vibrant showcase of talent.

Sanaa Kama Biashara, which translates to “Art as Business,” is a visionary initiative designed to empower artists in Kenya by equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to turn their creative passion into sustainable careers. The program covers various aspects of the art industry, including marketing, financial management, intellectual property and networking, giving artists the tools they need to thrive in the competitive world of art.

One of the highlights of the event was the inclusion of several high schools, including the Mama Ngina GirlsHigh School, who had the opportunity to exhibit their  artworks alongside the program’s graduates. This not only encouraged young talents but also emphasized the program’s commitment to fostering the next generation of artists.

The event was expertly hosted by media personality, Azeezah Hashim, who kept the audience engaged and entertained throughout the day. Adding to the atmosphere was the carefully curated music by DJ Masha, a well-known figure in Mombasa’s music scene, who provided the perfect sonic backdrop for the day’s festivities.

In a show of support for the arts and culture in Mombasa, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Kenneth Ambani graced the occasion with his presence, reaffirming the local government’s commitment to nurturing the creative industry. His attendance served as a testament to the program’s significance in the community.

The showcase also included various local artists from Mombasa, each contributing their distinct flair and viewpoint to the occasion. Our distinguished guest was Joseph Ngala, professionally recognized as MzeeNgala. He is a singer, saxophonist, and composer, credited with pioneering the well-loved Kenyan genre called Bango. This genre blends jazz and traditional Kenyan music, enriched with a soothing Latin influence, making it a favorite among music enthusiasts particularly from the Coast.

The Sanaa Kama Biashara graduation and showcase event was not just a celebration of artistic achievement but a testament to the power of community support and investment in the arts. It highlighted the potential of art to transform lives, create opportunities, and bring people together. As the program continues to nurture and empower artists , it is clear that the city’s cultural landscape is on an exciting and promising trajectory. This event was a reminder that when art and business join hands, the results are nothing short of extraordinary.
